On November 6, 2023, the Ministry of Education in Gaza suspended the 2023-2024 school year as the conditions of constant bombardment made it impossible to continue with the school year. Many Palestinians took to sheltering at UNRWA schools as the classrooms provide more shelter from the elements than tents and they assumed schools would be spared from bombardment. Since Israel started its genocide in the Gaza Strip on October 7, UNRWA has recorded more than 120 attacks on its facilities, including direct attacks on more than 30 UNRWA-run facilities.
