An estimated 1.9 million Palestinians in Gaza have been internally displaced, according to the United Nations. Many fled to “safety” in the south at the direction of the Israeli government. However, a New York Times investigation found that Israel dropped 2,000 lb bombs where it ordered Gaza's civilians to move for safety. Many others are now homeless due to the destruction of their homes by Israeli bombing. In most cases, they fled with little more than the clothes on their back. Currently, hundreds of thousands are sheltering in makeshift tents. These tents are not weatherproof nor equipped to handle the winter. Several children have been documented to have died from the cold.
