Detained

Each year, Israel imprisons approximately 500-700 children, some as young as 12 years old. On July 10, 2023, Save the Children released an article highlighting this issue titled “Stripped, Beaten and Blindfolded: New Research Reveals Ongoing Violence and Abuse of Palestinian Children Detained by Israeli Military.” Israel is the only country in the world that tries children in military courts. According to Israeli human rights organization B’TSelem, the most problematic issue of being tried in an Israeli military court is that you can be detained until the trial is over. Children are detained for “questioning” for days, or months, without access to their parents or lawyers. Another problematic issue is the concept of “administrative detention” where Israel holds Palestinians, including children, without charge or trial indefinitely.
