When electricity was cut off from Gaza, the telecom networks relied on batteries and generators to power their basic network elements. Generators run on fuel, which has not been allowed into Gaza since early October 2023. Israel also periodically imposes communications blackouts and targets the infrastructure of cellular providers. Cutting off communications results in the total isolation of besieged Palestinians in Gaza. The human suffering of not being able to check in on family and friends from outside the strip causes unnecessary emotional hardship. However, lack of communication within the strip is even more disabling as it prevents ambulances and first responders from reaching victims. There have been several instances of people using their cell phones to call for help from under the rubble, allowing first responders to rescue them. Finally, cutting off communications means images and videos documenting the ongoing genocide cannot be shared with the world.
